National Museum of the Marine Corps


The National Museum of the Marine Corps opened on the Corps’ 231st birthday in November 2006. The museum chronicles the history of the U.S. Marine Corps from its creation in 1775 through today.

Having attracted over three million visitors since its opening, the museum continues to be a favorite with both civilians and Marines.


Eisterhold Associates was engaged to develop a master plan for an 80,000 square foot addition to the original exhibit (completed by Christopher Chadbourne and Associates).

The core design team of the original exhibit was engaged to provide continuity and lend their expertise to the project.


Expanding Marine Corps History

Visitors can experience history in the making through new state-of-the-art immersive exhibits, a children’s education center, and a Marines sports hall of fame.


From rendering to reality

The new designs continue the story line of the original exhibits with several new individual gallery spaces, which portray the history of the Marine Corps through artifacts, graphics, audio & video media, lifelike cast figures, interactive displays, scenic tableaus, and dioramas.


Children’s Gallery

The Children’s Gallery, which opened at the end of 2017, is designed to provide a comfortable and engaging exhibit experience for mixed-age family groups.

The gallery exposes children to some of the key values, moments, and icons of the Corps. The moment families enter the gallery they are immersed in a set of historic settings that represent conflicts and locations the Marines have participated in around the world and through time.

The WWI exhibit let’s kids scramble through a trench environment complete with interactive periscope viewers.

In WWII, kids can climb on a landing craft, reinforcing the Marines’ amphibious activities.

Marine “guides” from the Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan host activities and have a “letter home” that describes where they fought, why, and what it was like for them there.


The primary communication goals of the adult-oriented content are distilled down and communicated to a younger audience. Children learn that Marines have served in nearly every conflict in U.S. history, Marines are prepared to move into action quickly and adapt accordingly, and that Marines serve around the world in various capacities.
